The term solar panel is used colloquially for a photo-voltaic (PV) module. A PV module is an assembly of photo-voltaic cells mounted in a framework for installation. Photo-voltaic cells use sunlight as a source of energy and generate direct current electricity. A collection of PV modules is called a PV Panel, and a system of Panels is an Array. Arrays of a photovoltaic system supply solar electricity to electrical equipment.

The main difference between the two technologies is the type of silicon solar cell they use: monocrystalline solar panels have solar cells made from a single crystal of silicon, while polycrystalline solar panels have solar cells made from many silicon fragments melted together.

PERC is an innovation that is currently available in the form of Mono and Poly cells. Conventionally, solar cells have an emitter layer on the front surface and a black coating on the rear side. On the other hand, Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) uses dielectric passivation film on the rear surface of the cells. Thus, in PERC cells, the front surface absorbs sunlight while the rear surface absorbs the scattered or reflected light. This results in higher generation than their traditional counterparts due to higher light absorption and internal reflectivity. These two factors adds multiple benefits to the end users, especially the residential consumers.
